Do they work? Yes — you do lose weight initially on a High Protein/Low Carb diet but 90% of your initial weight loss is water. And that’s where the problems begin.

What happens after your body has shed its water weight? It starts to burn the left over fat and then, because it lacks carbohydrates to burn for energy, it starts to burn protein – your muscles. These diets induce a metabolic condition known as ketosis which is really an unhealthy condition found in people who suffer from kidney disease and diabetes. It is not usually found in healthy people. Burning protein is not healthy because protein is nature’s building material and is vital for repairing and rebuilding your body’s cells, tissues and organs. Advocates of the Low Carb/High Protein/Fat diets play down ketosis and claim it’s proof your body’s burning fat. That’s true in part. Ketosis does burn fat but will also, eventually, burn your body’s muscle tissue.

If you’ve ever been on one of these diets, you’ve noticed that your urine gets yellow. This is due to ketones which is a by-product of ketosis. This is evidence that your body is burning and breaking up muscle tissue which is protein. That’s dangerous because if too much of your body’s protein is broken down you could suffer irreparable liver and kidney damage. Further symptons of muscle breakdown is evident in general weakness, fatigue and lack of energy.

Another thing to consider about Low Carb/High Protein diets is that during the process of ketosis your body also breaks down fatty acids and converts them to ketones and acetones which are used for fuel. A side effect of this is that your body loses vital minerals like potassium and sodium. This reduces your thyroid hormone level which in turn slows down your metabolism and subsequently your rate of weight loss. Furthermore ketosis could boost your blood cholesterol levels which is definitely not a safe situation.

Once you stop the regimen the weight piles right back on and then some.

There’s a simple way to avoid this. Do not restrict your diet to any one food group or category.

Rather than blindly cutting Carbohydrates and increasing protein and fat intake, you should opt for a healthy ratio of 30% protein, 15% fat, and 55% Complex Carbohydrates. This ratio will help you to lose weight steadily and safely. The key is to reduce fat and SIMPLE carbohydrates not Carbohydrates in general.

Another downside of Low Carb/High Fat diets is that studies show that the less carbs you consume the more likely you are to consume more fat. And this excess fat is stored up in your body’s fat cells where they’ll linger indefinitely, clogging up your arteries with unhealthy cholesterol. Thus the more fat you eat the more your body will retain no matter how little carbs you eat, even if you eat no carbs at all.

Now here’s the secret about eating complex carbs. Because complex carbs have a low glycemic index your body has to use 250% more energy to convert these carbs into fuel than it does to convert fat into fuel. Your body works harder to metabolise and burn calories from complex carbs than it does High Protein/Low Carb. The result? Safe, systematic weight reduction – the best way to avoid health problems and sagging skin caused by too rapid weight loss.

If you want a slim and shaped body, you certainly need to cut your extra carbohydrate intake. But this needs a careful selection of foods. Moving to low carbohydrate diet doesn’t mean just giving up meat for pasta or egg fro morning bread. Below are 9 useful tips to make the changeover or shift from the usual high carb diet to a low carbohydrate diet.

1. Count the carbohydrates. When you eat carbohydrate you must go in for complex ones like wholegrain breads and pasta, pulses and non-starchy vegetables and fruits.

2. Go for foods that lower glucose response. Fruits and vegetables that have the lowest glycaemic index are apples, apricots, broccoli and asparagus.

3. Avoid soft drinks. Soda, sweetened juices, aerated drinks are storehouses of low quality carbohydrates. You must stick to water when one feels thirsty.

4. Stock up on low carb food. You must fill your fridge and kitchen with non-starchy foods, fruits, vegetables, fish, dairy products so that snack time is also easier.

5. If you have to eat out, you must go to a restaurant that offers more than breads or pasta, seafood joint, for example.

6. Read food labels. Food labels have to show the grams of carbohydrates each serving contains. You must read the food labels carefully and keep track of the carbohydrates in the various foods consumed.

7. Nutty nuts. Peanuts and other nuts are full of mono-saturated fats and help contribute to weight loss and hearty health.

8. Change cooking oils. You must choose mono-saturated oils like peanut oil, olive oil, canola oil for cooking and salad dressing. They are healthier for the heart.

9. Stick to lean meats. Just because you are switching to a low carb diet you need not gorge on fatty meats. These have high levels of saturated fats (bad for the heart). You must opt for lean beef, pork, and poultry. You must remove the skin and any fat you can see.

No matter what diet you are on, you must exercise. It increases metabolism and flexibility, burns calories and strengthens muscles, improves circulation, and your mood. There are many more such benefits. The aim must be 30 minutes moderate exercise a day. Combined with a healthy, low carb diet, you can lose weight and stay healthy.

My mom and I have been arguing how low carb diets work for years. She insists that the only way to lose weight is to expend more calories than you eat. I tell her that she must consider that insulin regulates the way your body stores and uses fats and sugars. So, if you know how your body works, you can use that to your advantage to lose a few pounds.

Here’s How Low Carb Diets Work:

1. You reduce your carbohydrates – i.e. bread, rice, pasta, high-starch veggies, sugar, fructose, honey, fruit, ketchup, salad dressing, gum & baked beans. Instead, you eat low-starch veggies, plus protein and fat – things like lettuce, peppers, turkey, eggs, cheese, olive oil, chicken, fish, seafood, beef & pork. This depletes your body of sugar in about two days.

2. The fewer carbs you eat, the less insulin you make. Note: Insulin is produced when your blood glucose levels rise. It controls sugar levels in your blood stream (otherwise you have a build-up of sugar in your blood, i.e. diabetes). Insulin also acts as a hormone to condition your body to store carbs as fat in case of starvation and it tells the cells not to release stored fat.

3. When you’re not producing Insulin, you go into a state of “ketosis”. Ketosis is when your body primarily uses fat as fuel since there is no fast-burning fuel (glucose) available. If you’re not burning sugar, you start burning fat and thereby lose weight. If you’re always eating candy, white bread, potatoes & pasta, plus the fat, your body continues to burn only the carbs and stores the fat. That makes you fat.

Talk to your doc before starting any diet plan. I have, and as directed I only significantly reduce my carbs for short periods of time, then re-introduce high complex carbs a little at a time (whole grains, quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes), always trying to avoid white rice, white breads, potatoes and refined sugars (especially high fructose corn syrup).

Go ahead and splurge on that wedge salad with blue cheese, a char-broiled steak with sauteed mushrooms, creamed spinach and grilled asparagus once in a while. Enjoy every bite. It’s all low-carb or no carb. If you’ve burned off the sugars from previous meals your body will burn the fat as energy. Yeah!

BUT, if you add a roll or two, or some potatoes, a glass of wine or dessert, your body will convert the carbs to glucose, release insulin, use the glucose as energy and store the fat. You will have consumed a gazillion calories that will stick to you like glue. That’s the danger of going off and on the carb wagon without knowing what you’re doing.

Other things that help the release of fat is drinking plenty of water and upping the cardio.

The rate of obesity in humans is increasing each year and it looks like the situation will not improve anytime soon. Even though there are so many different diets out there; none of them will work for every person.

There is a highly effective diet available that has seen successful results over a large amount of people. It’s called the low carb diet and is one of the more simple diets to take part in.

The word “carb” in low carb diet refers to carbohydrates. When losing weight it’s important to keep the amount of carbohydrates you’re eating to a minimum. It’s important to understand why exactly an excessive amount of carbohydrates will increase your weight, before we further discuss the rationale of this diet.

Carbohydrates, whether they come from pasta, bread or a couple of donuts turn into glucose. Glucose is primarily used for energy and some is also stored in our muscles. Your body can only store about 2,000 calories of glucose and the rest as you might have guessed is turned into fat.

Essentially how the diet works is by restricting the amount of carbohydrates you consume. By doing this, your body has no choice but to use your fat as energy, thus you lose weight.

You may be discouraged in trying another diet however you should give the low carb diet a try, as it’s very simple and the results can be great. Most of the diet requires you to just count carbs and read food labels, so it’s something even you will be able to do.

The diet can be so effective that a lot of people will find themselves losing 3 to 4 pounds in the first week.

This all sounds great doesn’t it? However we need to determine whether the this particular diet is right for you. Before making the commitment you should consult with your doctor first. However the following is a general outline to whether or not you have a carbohydrate problem that needs rectifying:

You’re overweight but you don’t eat that much food
You experience sweet cravings
You eat when you’re bored or emotional
You lose some weight but put it back on shortly after
You feel hungry after shortly after eating a normal sized meal

If any of the above applies to you and you’re overweight, you may have a carbohydrate addiction problem. The low carb diet would be ideal in your case and is something you should consider.

There are a few things to consider though when going on this regimin. There are potential short term side effects that you may experience, they’re

Bad breath
Constipation
Dehydration
Dizziness

Unfortunately not everybody will be able to go on the low carb diet due to potential health hazards, they’re:

Pregnant Women
If you have kidney problems
Alcoholics and Caffeine Addicts

If you consume alcohol and caffeine you can go on the low carb diet, however they may halt the dieting process.

If you’re looking for another diet to try and one that will give you results which is easy to take part in, definitely give the low carb diet a go. Even children can take part in the diet, but as always first consult with your doctor.

We’ve heard that diet plans don’t work the same way for everyone, even if they collectively claim that they can reduce the amount of “bad” carbohydrates in our bodies. But if that’s the case, how are we supposed to know which low carbhoydrate diet plans would work best for us as individuals? The answer lies in careful study. Look into the requirements and benefits of each diet plan, and based on what you’ve learned, decide on the plan that would give you the best returns, in terms of time, money and effort.

Here are three of the more popular low carbohydrate diet regimes. Check them out and see how each one relates to your lifestyle and routines:

1. The Atkins Diet – This is currently the most popular patented diet plan in the market. The creator of this plan, Dr. Robert C. Atkins, is known as “The Father of Modern Low Carb Diets.” This diet promotes cutting back on carbohydrate intake, but stresses that different people have different nutritional needs, and therefore the diet plan must vary from person to person. The Atkins books contain information on a “carb ladder,” which details the amount of carbohydrates a person may introduce into the body, based on one’s glycemic load. The books also advocate balancing Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids. All this means you need to pay close attention to the amount of food you eat when you’re on this diet.

2. The South Beach Diet – This diet scheme, recently patented by Dr. Arthur Agatston, is thought of as a modified Atkins diet, with a few significant changes: while both Atkins and South Beach promote the elimination of “bad carbs,” the South Beach diet actively discourages eating the dark meat or butter of poultry, as they are fraught with saturated fat that produces “bad carbs.” Atkins poses no such restriction.

4. The “Caveman” Diet – This low carbohydrate diet advocates a return to our ancestral roots, in a liberal sense; it simply promotes the elimination of artificial processed foods from regular meals. In this diet you can eat pretty much anything except foods that contain sugar, salts, and seasoning. Most dairy products are not allowed either, as they are often found in processed form in this modern age. Meat, eggs, fish, fruit, most vegetables, and nuts are okay. This may seem somewhat permissive, but it is still a rather tough call if you live in a country like the United States, where it isn’t easy adhering to an all-natural organic diet scheme.

Are low carb diets safe? How safe is Atkins diet? Are low carb and Atkins diets dangerous to your health? These are burning questions for dieters all over the world.

I have personally tried low carb diets and Atkins diet and these diets made me lose weight very quickly. However not only did I lose body fat weight, I also lost muscle weight. I had very obvious muscle and fat loss because I can visually see my reduced muscle mass in the mirror.

This certainly isn’t healthy. Furthermore, the more muscle mass that you lose, the less toned your body shape is. The end result is that you will end up thin and yet looked flabby with lose skin.

The frustrating part will be that after you are off the low carb or Atkins diet, you will very probably gain back all the weight that you have loss and even more. This is because your muscles are active and they continuously burn calories. Since you have less fewer muscle mass now, your body’s metabolism or capacity to burn calories slows down tremendously.

In other words, when you put on weight again, you are putting on body fat instead of muscles if you do not exercise. You will be fatter and less healthy than before you went on the low carb or Atkins diet. To compound matters, because of lesser muscle tissues resulting in lower metabolism and thus lesser calories being burnt, you are going to get fatter.

Since then I have stayed off both low carb and Atkins diet. Both types of diets are almost similar as they require you to cut down drastically on your consumption of carbohydrates. Atkins diet went a step further by advocating almost no carbohydrate consumption for 2 weeks before adding some carbs to your meals gradually thereafter.

Besides losing muscles, how safe are low carb diets? This is what Dr Lyn Steffen and Dr Jennifer Nettleton from the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health commentated in a Lancet report, “Low carbohydrate diets for weight management are far from healthy, given their association with ketosis, constipation or diarrhea, halitosis, headache and general fatigue to name a few.”

The doctors warned that the diet increases protein load on the kidneys and alters the balance of acid in the body. This also results in loss of minerals from the bone stores and affect bone strength. The doctors went on to say that, “Our most important criterion should be indisputable safety and low carbohydrate diets currently fall short of this benchmark.”

Dr Atkins, the creator of the Atkins diet died in 2003 after he was alleged to have slipped on an icy road and hurt his head fatally. However his medical report stated that he had a history of heart attack, hypertension and congestive heart failure.

Were Dr Atkins medical conditions related to his low carbohydrates diet is anybody’s guess. Do you want to take the risk by going on a low carb diet? I don’t think I will. If I ever want to lose weight again, I will rather go on the proven method of healthy eating and regular exercises instead of jumping on any fad diets.

Low carb diets are very effective in achieving weight loss when followed. But the key word there is that they should be followed. However, there are controversies about their “healthiness”. Definitely, people get into these diets to lose weight. But what every person getting into this is not only the aspect of losing weight but also as always, keeping the weight off. But it goes beyond that. It also involves being and staying healthy and functional in whatever we do everyday. A slim person is definitely not attractive if he or she is weak from lack of nutrients and energy due to these low carb diets.

The body uses up carbohydrates first as a source of energy. If there are more carbohydrates taken in, the body stores the surplus as fat. If there are fewer carbohydrates taken it, the body is forced to use the stored fat for its energy requirement. The principle of these low carb diets is to take in food low in carbohydrates so that the body is forced to use its stored fat.

By drastically reducing carbohydrates to a small fraction of a person’s diet, the body goes into “ketosis”. The body burns its own fat to convert into energy A person in ketosis is getting energy from ketones. Ketones are little carbon fragments that are created by the breakdown of stored fat. One feels less hungry when his or her body is in ketosis. The end result is that he or she is likely to eat less even if allowed to do so. In effect, the body is transformed from a carbohydrate-burning machine into a fat-burning one, thus making fat the primary energy source. This brings us to the most fundamental fact of dieting: the less fat you have, the lighter you weigh. The end result is the desired weight loss.

There are diets like Atkins that seem to be a dream come true. It stems from its design that a person could eat as much as he or she wants from a wide variety of food that other diets steer away from. Steaks, meat, crab, eggs, all types of protein based food are allowed since the body will burn carbohydrates first and not protein or fats. Basically, it follows the same low carb principle of reducing carbohydrate intake and forcing the body to use fat towards weight loss.

But experts are concerned about the long term safety of the diet. By contemporary medical standards, the risk of heart diseases, stroke, cancer, liver and kidney problems are very extremely high. These risks have been pointed out repeated by a number of health researches on high fat diets.

Other low carb diets are cleansing in nature such as the detox diet. It helps in the health reassessment of one’s lifestyle, eating patterns and focus on foods. Here, one becomes more aware of one’s food intake. However, there are individuals, such as diabetics, people with low blood sugar or eating disorders have to stay clear of it. They will find themselves more in trouble than they are already.

Low carb diets serve their purpose. But there is no substitute for the traditional, proven healthy lifestyle of a balance diet of the basic food groups in the nutritionists’ pyramid order combined with the proper exercise. However, should a person still go through with these diets for whatever reason, he or she should be equipped with knowledge of not only the benefits but most especially the risks. Everyone wants that slim, healthy look. But everyone should also go for health in a sustainable manner.

Beware, these diet tips are not the normal nutrition and healthy eating recommendations.

Sometimes you have to start doing things different in your diet to get the weight loss results you want. These suggestions will help you get healthy first so you can lose weight easily.

Ready?

Here are 5 ways to switch it up and reap the weight loss rewards!

1. Fresh Vegetable Juices – Fresh vegetable juices can get more than enough nutrients than you need and will stave off hunger for hours. A good juicer and some fresh organic vegetables are all you need to replace a meal with a fantastic tasting, nutrient rich juice. For this diet tip, start with carrot and apple juices, then start adding greens like spinach, kale, celery, parsley and bok choy.

2. Cayenne Pepper – Cayenne pepper speeds up your metabolism for a period up to 2 hours after you eat it. Every wonder why you sweat after eating something spicy? This is why! A speedy metabolism means quick digestion and more calories burned. You can find this at any grocery store.

3. A Slice of Lemon in Water – A slightly acidic water is fantastic for hydration. When a liquid is acidic it carries more hydrogen atoms, this will help hydrate your body. If you use this diet tip to stay hydrated, the less hungry you will be. Lime will also do the trick.

4. Raw Organic Chocolate (Cacao Beans) – What your chocolate comes from is actually an incredible superfood. Cacao beans are one of the highest sources of magnesium of any food. Magnesium helps elevate mood and eliminate hunger pangs. Most Americans suffer from low levels of magnesium, which can cause depression and many other psychological issues. Organic cacao beans can be found on the web or at some local health food stores.

5. Kelp Powder – Use this as a salt substitute. Sea vegetables have some of the highest mineral content of any plant on earth, so the more minerals you get the better your body functions. When we eat low- or non-mineralized foods our body continues to crave. Add some kelp powder to a salad, avocado, tomato, or put it in your meals and you’ll get some of the same taste as salt minus the negative effects. You can find this at your local health food store.

Introduce these healthy foods into your diet slowly and you’ll reach the optimum health and weight loss you deserve!

Losing weight is seemingly simple – expend more calories than you take in and you will lose weight. As millions of dieters can tell you, though, losing weight isn’t as easy as it sounds. In order to use more calories than you consume, you either have to eat fewer calories, burn more calories through exercise, or a do combination of both. The problem with this is that eating fewer calories often results in hunger and lack of energy.

A diet that will provide nutrients and energy, as well as a satisfying amount of food, is one that will result in permanent healthy weight loss. So what is this diet?

The secret is the concept of calorie density. The best foods for weight loss are bulky and high in nutrients while being low in calories. This is why vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes are excellent foods to eat for weight loss. They contain a large amount of water and fiber to satisfy hunger, and they also contain a lot of nutrients to provide energy and promote overall health.

On the other hand, the foods dieters should avoid provide very few nutrients, contain little water or fiber, and are high in calories. Fat and/or sugar are what make foods calorie dense and nutrient poor. We all know which foods these are! Ice cream, hamburgers, deep dish pizza, and cake are just a few examples.

If you want to be satisfied and feel healthy on a weight loss diet, you have to eat foods that contain a lot of water, fiber, and nutrients. Eating these foods will make you feel great! And when you feel good and see the scale moving in the right direction, it can be easier than ever to keep losing weight.

The reason many diets fail is that they just plain make you feel miserable. They rely on nutrient-poor, fiber less foods like meal replacement shakes and bars. These diets are destined to fail because they can’t be sustained over the long term. No one can eat like that forever!

Diets that do work are ones that make you feel so good you want to keep it up. Eating nutrient-packed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes along with low fat meats and dairy products (if you so desire) is healthy, satisfying, and will result in reaching your perfect weight and optimum health.

At last estimate as many as 30 million Americans are following a low carb diet. Advocates contend that the high amount of carbs in our diets has led to the increase in such health problems as obesity and diabetes.

Some diets restrict carbohydrates to a point where the body becomes ketogenic. Ketosis is a physiological condition in response to chronic starvation and causes most of the body to utilize fatty acids as an alternative source of energy.

Most of us don’t need to reach such an extreme. Most of us just need to follow a few simple rules.

And most often these rules won’t mean total abstinence from the foods you love. Just a small deviation from your normal dietary routine. Better choices when it comes to which breads you choose and which snacks you choose too.

It’s not totally off limits to snack, just know that what most people consider snack food’s definitely out of the question.

With that in mind here’s a few ideas as to what should and shouldn’t be included in your low carb diet plan.

Cut out the processed fats including hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated oils that have been heated, and fats that are combined with junk carbs. Processed fats are the culprits that put on flab and clog your arteries.

Cut the simple carbs like sugar, fructose, bleached flour, cornstarch and fruit juice. Stick with the whole fruit instead, with its fiber intact.

What you want to include are natural proteins, vegetables and whole fruits along with complex carbs such as whole grain breads.

Simple carbs are converted into fat which is stored by the body. This is exactly the problem that causes weight gain. Your body stores the fat for use later, when it thinks you are starving.

Complex carbs, on the other hand, are used for energy. These are good carbs. Yes, there are good carbs too.

This gives you a well balanced low carb diet that doesn’t completely rob you of energy producing carbs. Also by eating high fiber whole grains you’ll keep your insides clean and healthy and you’ll be more regular.

Personally, I like to snack on cheese and pepperoni slices. You get a good amount of protein and fat and virtually no carbs.

Drink plenty of water, excercise regularly and make a low carb diet a part of an overall lifestyle and you’ll surely lose weight, look better and improve your overall health.
